Amazon has borrowed $98 billion this year.

Your mortgage could never. πŸ’…

But going into Amazon's third-quarter report, expected around Oct. 29: is this still a Strong Buy, or is the world's biggest online shop turning into the world's biggest borrower?

When we last look at Amazon, we pointed out that they own something most companies would love to have: a stake in Anthropic big enough to help pay for its data centers without asking a bank or the bond market.

That stake is still there. But a lot has happened in since.

Amazon sold its first-ever bond in British pounds. AWS posted a higher price list with 2027 capacity already mostly booked. And a draft of Anthropic's IPO paperwork leaked to the press.

So let's test the case piece by piece. Spoiler: we think Q3 operating profit could land far above what the forecast implies.

But first, the bill.
